On the third Sunday of May, San Severo honours her patron saint: Maria SS. Del Soccorso. Each district dedicates fireworks on the ground to the Black Madonna, in which so many devotees, the Fujenti, throw themselves headlong and run beside and demonstrate their faith.
The Madonna arrived in the city in the sixteenth century, thanks to the Augustinians. Then, during the eighteenth century, it was carried in procession through the fields and ended a severe drought. Since then, she conquered the hearts of the citizens of San Severo.
On the eve of the third Sunday in May, the statue of the Madonna is carried in procession in each district. The Madonna stops to attend the fireworks organized by the districts and the race of Fujenti.
23 districts and 23 batteries. To choose the most beautiful one, since 2004 the Palio of the fireworks is in place.
Who are the Fujenti? They are simply devout young people who enjoy the entire party with a fixed thought to Maria SS. Del Soccorso, who is blessing them.
